In the midst of the world economic challenge in 2008/09, Singapore pulled off our very first Aerospace Supplier eXchange 2009, which was greeted with resounding success, creating the platform for over SGD$8 million dollars worth of deals to be negotiated.

The beginning of 2010 leads the way to a positive growth in the Singapore aerospace industry, mirroring that of other growth-oriented aerospace hubs in the Asia-Pacific as well as Europe and Americas. The bulk of aerospace growth, both in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul as well as Aerospace Manufacturing will be in the Asia-Pacific, as expounded by many aviation studies and consultancies all over the world. AeroStrategy Limited projects that MRO growth in the Asia-Pacific will grow at a CAGR of at least 5.1%, and other statistics show aerospace manufacturing in the region will continue to boom.

Singapore leads the pack, having experienced up to 13% CAGR in MRO since 1990, and similar double-digit growth in manufacturing in the same period. Our prime location and close proximity to booming hubs in China, India and the Middle East, coupled with our position as a launch pad for businesses into the Asia-Pacific, make Singapore a country ripe with opportunities in the aerospace industry. With Rolls Royce engine manufacturing, Pratt and Whitney and other major industry players coming soon with the development of the Seletar Aerospace Park, the future looks promising for Singapore Aerospace.

Singaporean-grown and Singapore based suppliers are steadily growing in capability and capacity. And with our strong IP laws, effective and safe business environment, seamless and dynamic infrastructure, Singapore remains a leader in the aerospace supply industry. A small but growing cluster of companies in the business of precision engineering and electronics manufacturing also looks at increasing their capabilities through expanding with their customer OEMs. Aerospace Certification (AS9100/9110/9120) and quality process accreditation activities in the country have also heated up, with many taking time during the recession to upgrade their quality systems and ready themselves for the upturn.

The ASX 2011 show aims to bring partners from the region together, to exhibit capabilities found not just in Singapore but our neighbouring countries, that would appeal to global OEMs seeking to outsource packages and capabilities to Singapore. Together as a region, the Asia-Pacific aerospace industry can then grow and capitalize on the globalization of the aerospace trade.
